T

he 2019 Chinese Culture Summer Program rang down its curtain on July 26,2019 on the Hongkou campus of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).

On July 8th,nineteen students from Netherlands,England, the United States,Jamaica,Greece,Germany,Egypt and China gathered together for a wonderful journey on Chinese culture.SISU's cooperative partners joining the program are increasing this year;with optimized and theme-based lecture modules, the students are exposed to more systematic instructions and interactive activities.During the three weeks, they probed into the life of China by going through lecture series on Chinese culture and taking several city tours.

The lectures given by SISU scholars and professors mainly cover four modules, including Chinese thoughts and history,Chinese traditional art,Chinese social life and customs, and Chinese law and policy.Under careful organization, these lectures are both informative and enlightening, offering the students a comprehensive overview of the Chinese civilization.

Besides, the program also extended to off-campus experience which provided the students an opportunity to feel the real life in China and related it to classroom learning. The in-city visits included attractions such a Yu Garden,Shanghai Museum, the Bund and the Chenghuang Temple.

During the whole process, the Chinese students from SISU and the Chinese University of Hong Kong learned together with the international students and volunteered to help with their study and life.SISU students showed the international students around the city, introducing Chinese tea and calligraphy, making pottery, and recommending Chinese traditional food.Through friendly conversations, both Chinese students and international students had a better understanding of each other's culture, history and customs.

On the closing ceremony, five groups consisting of international students and Chinese students made presentations on the subjects related to Chinese culture;the subject ranged from Confucianism to the Belt and Road Initiative policy. The students explored relevant issues from different perspectives and integrating views of different schools.

The Chinese Culture Summer Program connected students of different cultural background together, fully representing SISU's international vision.Through communication, the students adopted an open view towards cultural differences and developed a generous mindset embracing new ideas.
